As part of the 50th Azure Meetup Ruhrgebiet on September 17th, 2024, I gave a talk on application modernization and technical debt management in the context of cloud transformation. Most companies already use cloud services in one way or another. In recent years, many companies have also migrated their first applications to the cloud and developed new applications based on cloud services. However, the potential for modernizing the application and software architecture has not always been fully exploited. In addition, some companies have accumulated technical debt that now leads to problems with the quality of their cloud-based applications. The underlying software architectures had to be improved at great expense – and often on an ad hoc basis – to eliminate problems with performance, security or costs, and more. Thus, there is the question of how applications can be effectively modernized and technical debt repaid in the context of a cloud transformation.
In this talk, I elaborated on the impact of the cloud-native property on software architecture. Moreover, I discussed how proven architecture methods can be used to modernize an application, its software architecture, and repay technical debt.
